WHY ARE SERVICE DOGS FOR VETERANS NEEDED?
Many of our veterans are returning home with injuries that are physical and psychological. They deserve quality treatment and care. Service dogs can provide the support our veterans need to heal and adjust to their new lives.
This is where This Able Veteran (TAV) steps in. We are a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization of dedicated veteran and civilian individuals working tirelessly to provide highly trained Service dogs for America’s injured veterans.
Service dogs can help our veterans.
They can make the difference.
Each and every veteran deserves the best from each of us.
WHAT WE DO
- Provide and train Service dogs and work with the veterans.
TAV Service dogs are trained professionals qualified to assist and enrich the lives of veterans living with injuries from their military service. From Guide and Alert dogs for sight or hearing impairments, to Mobility and Assistance dogs for balance and independence, to our unique program for training and matching Service dogs for veterans living with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) – TAV’s Service dogs are both qualified and Certified. - Train the trainers.
TAV’s Service Dog Trainer’s Academy is highly specialized. We provide expert coaching to individuals and clinicians who train Service dogs or who wish to incorporate working with dogs into veteran rehabilitation. TAV’s Academy students learn to connect effectively with veterans living with both physical as well as psychological injuries via Veteran Administration specialists; become educated in military culture, and gain essential Service dog training skills. - Offer Certification standards and testing.
To ensure veterans receive only the highest quality Service dogs, we have developed rigorous trainer and dog certification standards. These certifications are multi-modal and are achievable by either successfully passing TAV’s multi-modal trainer’s courses, or by passing TAV Certification tests. - Maintain a breeding program.
Our breeding program ensures that we can select the most appropriate Service dog candidate for each individual veteran’s needs. By choosing dogs with the most suitable temperaments, it shortens the learning curve, maximizes training efforts, and shortens wait time for our veterans to be paired with their Service dog.
